Final Show Planning

With the final show starting on the 6th June we have the deadline of completing out display board at the end of the 27th may. With those dates coming closer I have started to come up with plans on how I can decorate my board and how I am going to layout my work. I have done rough sketches of how I would like my boards to look like, also know where everything I want is to be placed this would make the process when the day comes to start attaching everything in place a lot easier and faster.

With the rough sketches I am able to get a better understanding of how I can display my work also figuring out what I can place on the boards. Furthermore, it can give me and idea of what equipment’s I would be needing. With the rough sketches done I will need a mannequin to place my garment on, However, it depends on what I idea I choose which would indicate how many mannequins I need. I will need a shelf and a railing to hang the rest of my garments. I also have an idea of placing coral like display items around the floor of my board to give the coral like affect to it. I am keeping the display board very simple as I want the main focus to be on my work and the garments I have created.

Sample Boards

With the developments of my samples I have placed them on boards to display them in the final show so many people are able to see my development and understand where I got my inspiration from. I do feel that my FMP has been mainly of me exploring different ways to exaggerate the silhouette and that is the reason why I have many sample boards. I wanted to show all my samples and how I was able to crate my garments. I do feel the samples are the most important aspect of making as you are able to try your theory out and see if the technique would work which then helps you decide if you can carry that technique out in the final collection.

In my sample board collection, I have picked the samples that link to final collection that ones that I have used to further generate my final collection. Those few samples are the ones that inspired me to create my garments like the way they are.

In my opinion I have enjoyed picking the ones that I like the most and the ones that I feel represent my garments the most it was hard as I wanted to put all my samples on the board but I picked the ones that are very eye-catching and inspirational.

Technical drawing

With the use of software illustration, I had to only draw half the silhouette of the garment and I am able to reflect the garment it is very quickly they also come very symmetrical to each other. I created my technical drawing with the use of Wacom tablet I found it much quicker then the use of the computer mouse as I can freely move mu hand and create smooth lines without continually scrolling the screen.

Screen Shot 2016-04-28 at 15.48.48IMG_1857 I have added the more detail on my flat drawing I created loops to show how my top looks as you the previous drawing you were not able to tell if there was anything on top with this you have a clear idea of what texture is on the top.

Making of the bottoms

Looking at my design I decided to create leggings as they are better fitting with the design of the bottoms, also with all the surface decoration I had on the bottoms I feel that the leggings will hold their shape and I can apply all the surface design easily. The only disadvantage of using jersey fabric is that it is stretchy and when I was cutting out the pattern block I had to be very careful not to stretch the fabric to much I would be cutting more than the original outline with could cause the problem of the overall bottom be a lot smaller sizes then I wanted.

Furthermore, after sewing all the pieces I did have a problem as I sewn the waist hem but it is very losing so I had to unpick the seam and sew an elastic band around the waist hem so the legging is able to hold itself around the waist of the wearer. Moreover, I had the problem of finding balls that I would be placing around the leggings as well as fringing. With less time left I couldn’t order anything online as the posting was not 100% sure when it will arrive. While talking to my tutor and she suggesting using the play pit balls however, they only come in 100 pack I did not want to waste more than half the balls as I would only be using 10 or 20 the most. I went back in town to search in other craft shops I finally found craft balls in the papercahse the also came in different sizes which was a plus because in my design the balls are different sizes.

Overall, I had enjoyed making the bottoms as they are something I have never done before this was the first time making bottoms and it was quite interesting to do. it was a challenge for me which has given me more skills for later on the future I can develop the skill and crate more bottoms in different shape and sizes. Furthermore, any area I feel I would improve on would be the colour section I do feel that I could have added colour to the bottom even if it was only to the finding this could have made it more eye -catching life like just the way coral is.

Making of the Tops

Looking at my designs I have altered them in the making stage as I decided to create two separate tops the first one would be a knitted sleeveless top that would go underneath the second top which would be designed to just be placed on the shoulders. With the first design it was all one top with the knitted bottom and oversized lops around the shoulder and chest. However, I do feel by creating to different tops you are able to have different outfit looks.

The making of the knitted top was very exciting process I have never knitted a full garment so this was another first for me. To start off I wanted my pattern to have thin straps and to achieve that I used the swimming pattern block this way it made it a lot easier to have the right strap length. I had the pattern block cut in size 12 as it is the standard model size and it will fit any model I decided to use for my shoot. after that I measured how many needles I would need in the chunky knit machine, I also made sure that I added extra 6 needles on each end of the top as the knit can shrink. After completing the knit creating two square knitted fabric I then cut out the pattern pieces. When I did the fitting I found out that they were a lot smaller than the original 12 size this caused a problem as I couldn’t have had more pieces with that in mind I altered the design instead having the pieces sewn tighter I would create stings from the knitted yarn used and attach them on the sides of the top this extended the size of the top giving it more space.

On the other hand, when making the second more detailed top that would have the most of the design with the oversized loop. I had wished I had enough time to add the small detail which would have been beads and sequins. This would have given the top more colour making it eye-catching but it would have fitted more into my them coral as it would have been full off colour.

Generally, I am pleased with the final outcome of the two tops however, if I had more time I would have liked to create another top with the loop but have it multi-coloured and other surface decorations on.

Using the Wacom tablet/Pen

It was my first time using a Wacom tablet and pen, it was very hard to use it first I had to get a feel of how to navigate myself around the screen. However, I found it more useful then when I had used the mouse, with the pen I am able to draw the detail more freely just like if I was using an actual pencil. Whereas the mouse I am more restricted.

the garment silhouette and texture where I can easily replicate with the use of the Wacom tablet as I can create fluent brush strokes but also make smooth curved lines. With more practice I do feel I will be more confident with the Wacom tablet and use it for all my illustrations. My aim is to continue using the Wacom tablet to become more confident with it and able to freely use it for every design aspect of my work.Screen Shot 2016-04-28 at 15.48.22.png

As it was the first time using the Wacom tablet and pen I only created a simple final illustration of my final pieces I used the sketch I created photocopied them and used them as guide lines when creating my digital drawing on illustrator.

Knot Samples

It was something that I have never done, it was a new experience for me even though it is a very simple technique, easy to do and it did not take long. What I liked about it was the very simple look it has also how you can play around with it. It can be placed anywhere on a garment which I love. I was pleased with the outcome. I started off with the first fabric I got which was cotton muslin fabric I got a ¼ meter of it as it was the first try and I did not want to waste much fabric, the fabric itself is very light weight, it holds its structure which was a key thing however, when I created few knots I realised the fabric was unable to crate very big knots as it was very thin cotton muslin I did try knotting twice, over lapping the knots they just did not come as oversized as I wanted. Moving on, I then tired with a thick jersey fabric, with the thickness of this fabric it helped creating big knots I was pleased with the outcome also the fabric was not fraying whereas the muslin fabric was fraying a lot causing it to have a very messy look. It would have caused me a problem if I use knots in my garments as I would have had to over-lock all the edges of each strip before I create knots with it and you would have been able to see the seams.

The reason for getting the idea of creating knots is because they linked to me concept very well, the idea of creating coral rocks if I had more time I would have liked to replicate the coral reef using knots in using other fabrics colours, also applying other sample work with it such as some bead work so I have a mixed material sample, this would have given me more ideas that I could have used in my designing. I do feel that I could have done more samples relating to this technique maybe add other embellishments with the knots see how that works or use a thick fabric to create very oversized Knots.
